Nutrition Services

The unique requirements of many cancer patients make it essential, though often difficult, to maintain adequate nutrition. At Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, comprehensive nutrition services are provided to all inpatients and to all radiation-therapy and short-stay patients as well. The patient's nutritional status is assessed through a process involving careful interviewing, laboratory data and clinical observation. Calorie and protein needs are calculated, based on the patient's height, weight, age and other factors that target the patient's needs as compared with what he or she actually can eat.

Food intake is monitored closely while a patient is hospitalized. Dietitians also educate patients and caregivers about nutrition essentials to be followed at home. Additional follow-up is offered by phone or mail. Ellis Fischel's nutrition specialists offer outreach presentations on nutrition and cancer to hospitals, senior citizens organizations and elementary schools.
