Rehabilitative & Counseling Services

The physicians and staff of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center pride themselves on treating the whole person, not just the disease. A wide range of services is available to help patients cope with physical and emotional effects of cancer.

By focusing on what patients are able to do, the rehabilitation staff provides an encouraging, motivational environment to ensure they realize their full potential and maximize their quality of life. Ellis Fischel Cancer Center's rehabilitation program, located at University Hospital and Clinics, includes three disciplines:

1. Occupational therapy
The goal of occupational therapists is to return the patient to optimal performance of safe and independent daily living. This therapy improves a patient's function in self-care, leisure and work.

2. Physical therapy
Physical therapy assists patients in maximizing their mobility potential and learning about pain-relief methods. Therapists also design home programs to maintain functional ability at home, provide education on energy-conservation methods and assist with discharge planning.

3. Speech-language pathology
Speech pathologists work mostly with head and neck surgery patients. They often visit these patients before their operation then work with them for communication and swallowing therapy throughout their inpatient stay.
