Telephones & Communications Aids While in the hospital, you may place calls within the hospital or to any other University of Missouri-Columbia phone number by dialing 1, 2, or 4, then the four-digit extension, as appropriate. To make local calls in the Columbia area, dial 9, then the seven-digit number. Contact the operator for long-distance assistance by dialing 9 + 0. If you're using a calling card, dial 9 + 0, then the phone number including the area code. Enter the card number after the tone. If you dial an 800 number to use your calling card, dial 9 + 1 + 800, then the seven-digit number. Phone calls for you will be transferred to your room by the hospital operator, or the caller may call your room directly. Between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., all calls will be sent to the nurses' station first. If you are in an intensive care unit, a phone will be brought to your bedside as needed. Telephone aids are available for hearing-impaired patients. TTYs (teletypewriters) are available for deaf patients. Sign language interpreters also are available. Contact your nurse to arrange for these services. A pay phone is located on the first floor, near the main lobby. Phones are located throughout the hospital, in halls and other areas, and may be used to answer overhead pages, contact the hospital operator or to place local calls. These phones may also be used to place credit card or collect calls. A special beeper service is available for visitors who are waiting to hear about patients who are in surgery. Please inquire at the Information Desk in the main lobby. Television Color televisions and program guides are available in patient rooms, all of which have cable TV. Earphones are available upon request. Hospital volunteers provide a library of books and magazines for your reading pleasure. To select a book or magazine, simply ask your nurse to assist you in acquiring a book or magazine. We offer the following cable channels:
