Programs and Priorities

Cancer Research

It is the goal of the University of Missouri to advance the cancer research and services of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center to the highest national rank. To achieve nationwide prominence, Ellis Fischel and the University of Missouri seek designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

With no designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Missouri and very few in the Midwest, this designation would ensure Missourians access to the latest cancer therapies and opportunities to participate in early clinical trials. The University of Missouri-Columbia boasts a unique combination of units that contribute to cancer research, education, and care including Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, the Colleges/Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Engineering, and Journalism as well as the most powerful and highly-utilized university research reactor in the nation. Ellis Fischel and the University of Missouri truly have an opportunity to become a one-of-a-kind model for cancer research, education and care.

The majority of the criteria needed to obtain comprehensive cancer center status already exists at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and the University of Missouri. However, to play a nationally prominent role, we must further enhance our research facilities, recruit additional scientists and researchers as well as fund equipment needs.

Your financial support will result in new and improved cancer research treatments, helping to build a bridge from research laboratories to bedside medicine.

Ernest and Eugenia Wyatt Guest House

The Ernest and Eugenia Wyatt Guest House, on the grounds of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, provides a convenient and comfortable haven for cancer patients and their families. Located on the west end of the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center campus, the guest house includes 12 bedrooms with private bathrooms, a kitchen, laundry facilities and counseling rooms.

Your contributions to this project will be used to support a permanent endowment established to cover the expenses associated with the daily operations of the guest house in the years to come.

Education and Outreach

From early detection and diagnosis, through treatment and rehabilitation, Ellis Fischel cares for the total person ~ not just the disease. That is why Ellis Fischel is committed to providing comprehensive patient education and outreach services to patients and their family members.

Ellis Fischel Cancer Center offers the most comprehensive cancer screening program in mid-Missouri. Additionally, Ellis Fischel offers a wide range of rehabilitative and counseling services to help patients cope with the physical and emotional effects of cancer. Patients have access to counseling and physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy to help them quickly resume their regular lifestyles.
